"I really don't know for sure," Shanahan said. "That's why it's day by day. We'll see how it goes." The AP suggests that it could be a smokescreen, but Shanahan is concerned enough about McNabb to hold Rex Grossman out of the preseason finale. The Skins open versus Dallas two Sundays from now.

"Be stunned if he doesn't," writes CSN Washington's Ryan O'Halloran. Coach Mike Shanahan has been hesitant to suggest that McNabb would return healthy in time for the opener, but he also categorized him as "day to day." Though McNabb's ankle is still "visibly swollen," the chances are much better than 50/50 that he'll suit up for the opener.
